The Resilient Activist is a national organization that supports climate activists navigating stress and anxiety. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the organization was founded by yoga/meditation teacher and former software developer, Sami Aaron, after the suicide of her son, who had suffered from depression and anxiety as an environmental activist. Grief is an often underdiscussed part of the work that can lead to burnout, disconnection and isolation. The Resilient Activist helps environmental activists take care of themselves; set boundaries; and rediscover the joys of nature, stewardship, and community so that they can continue their advocacy in a healthy, sustainable way. Since 2018, this small nonprofit has offered workshops on ecology and sustainability, opportunities for community online and in Kansas City, and resources on mental health, meditation, and the emotional benefits of time spent in nature.

One of its key programs is an interactive 2.5-hour workshop called “Four Steps for a Resilient Life,” which helps activists understand what they enjoy about their activism and what they could change to alleviate overwhelm and burnout. It also hosts a speakers bureau, connecting scientists and mental health experts with “communities who care,” ranging from garden clubs and church groups to university classes and local governments. All content is tailored to the needs of specific groups and available on an affordable, sliding-scale basis. The nonprofit also hosts Resilient Activist Conversations, a monthly interview series; a JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Book Club; and events, such as native garden tours, nature walks, yoga, and group volunteer days, in the Kansas City area. The Resilient Activist employs an executive director and two subcontractors, and is looking to raise funds for more programming and administrative staff.
