Green Islam strives to highlight the incompatibility of modern consumption and lifestyle practices with Islamic teachings, in turn seeking to inspire Muslims to re-engage and act in accordance with the ethical spirit of Islam. The organization began its journey in 2022, when a diverse group of Muslims from around the world connected through social media over their shared passion for environmentalism and ethical living. Through events, academic research, and advocacy, Green Islam highlights Islamic teachings of peace, justice, and compassion toward fellow humans, animals, and the environment. The Ummah (or, Muslim community) is faced with worsening food shortages, floods, droughts, rising temperatures, health risks, displacement, and more. That’s why Green Islam believes it is imperative that Muslims become responsible Stewards of Allah’s (SWT) world before the consequences of modern lifestyles are beyond repair.

Green Islam carries out its mission through the efforts of volunteers from around the world, operating in the U.S., Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. Green Islam advances environmentalism and veganism in the Muslim community through academic research, media content, and advocacy toolkits. They also collaborate with Imams and community leaders to share guidance on sustainable living that aligns with Islamic teachings. Alongside their research, advocacy, and communications efforts, Green Islam also focuses on in-person and virtual events. One such event is a first-of-its-kind interfaith plant-based, zero-waste Green Iftar – a communal meal featuring Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ (peace and blessings be upon him) favorite foods. This event is carried out in partnership with organizations around the world, in multiple cities and countries.
