National Council of Negro Women Lorain County, OH Section

The Lorain County Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) is part of a national organization that is leading, inspiring, and elevating women of African descent, their families and communities. Founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, NCNW connects more than two million people through education, advocacy, and service. In Lorain County, a diverse community of over 315,000 residents, many families face economic and health-related challenges. About 34 percent of Black residents live below the poverty line, and median household incomes are significantly lower than the county average. The Lorain County Section addresses community needs through programs like an eight-week life-skills course for high school seniors, which concludes with a formal cotillion, along with workshops on financial literacy and estate planning, a “Health Is Wealth” luncheon, and civic engagement efforts like voter registration. These initiatives help foster stability, confidence, and opportunity for youth and families across the region.

Guided by an eight-person team and helmed by President Regan Phillips, the NCNW Lorain County Section has been serving families in Lorain County, located on Lake Erie near Cleveland, since 1987. Once a hub for steel, shipbuilding, and auto manufacturing, Lorain faces economic shifts, environmental concerns, and a poverty rate above the national average. Despite these challenges, the organization highlights the strength and potential of its community. Through programs like the annual cotillion, young people are building life skills and confidence. The group also hosts scholarship awards, back-to-school drives, and seasonal coat giveaways. Health workshops, voter education drives, and community events keep residents connected and informed. By partnering with local schools, churches, and groups, NCNW Lorain creates opportunities for youth, seniors, and families, uplifting the community with pride and hope.
