The Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) is a grassroots nonprofit advocating for family farmers and sustainable agriculture in the state of Iowa. The state chapter of the National Farmers Union, IFU has been the voice of Iowa’s independent family farmers since 1915. The organization works to address issues such as market consolidation, climate change, limited access to land and capital for beginning farmers, and the need for fair farm policies. Serving family farmers, ranchers, and rural Iowans, the organization advances its mission through legislative advocacy, farmer education, coalition-building, and community organizing and outreach. IFU also offers workshops, policy engagement opportunities, and technical assistance to help farmers adopt climate-smart practices, navigate agricultural policy, and build resilient farming enterprises. Through these efforts, the Iowa Farmers Union strives to create a fair, sustainable, and inclusive food and farming system that benefits the people of Iowa and the planet at large.

With five staff members and thousands of members across the state, the Iowa Farmers Union is a community-driven group. In their 2024 Legislative Policy, IFU endorsed research efforts by Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship that focus on developing practical soil health indicators and engaging farmers in effective soil management practices. In October 2024, IFU intervened in a federal lawsuit challenging the “Swampbuster” provision of the 1985 Farm Bill—a long-standing conservation policy that has protected wetlands, safeguarded clean water, and supported sustainable farming practices for four decades. The organization has also been active in opposing Senate File 394, proposed legislation that aims to shield pesticide manufacturers from lawsuits related to cancer claims and strip Iowans of their right to hold corporations accountable for environmental pollution. After over a century, IFU continues to stand on its principles to provide Iowans with safe and sustainably grown food, a clean environment, and healthy communities.
