Destination Transformation Consultants takes a holistic view of its community’s well-being, and provides inspiration and resources to help people change their lives for the better. Originally founded in the 1990s to support people with HIV, the organization was reinvigorated in 2023 by founder Dr. Dorotha Love Hall. It now operates across five Southeast Arkansas counties: Arkansas, Desha, Drew, Jefferson, and Lincoln. After discovering the pervasiveness of asthma within the predominantly African-American community it serves, potentially caused by the use of generators for heat in winter, it became clear that its goal of addressing people’s mental, physical, and economic needs naturally intersects with the energy transition. From helping people save money on their utility bills to pointing them towards opportunities to train in the solar industry, Destination Transformation Consultants views the climate crisis as both a driver of public health issues and an opportunity for action.

The organization is African-American and women-led, with six further board members. Its work spans four domains – health, education and youth empowerment, energy and climate, and workforce development – which it sees as deeply interconnected. For instance, while it offers educational support in a traditional sense by providing tutoring for struggling students, it also hosts workshops on topics such as energy conservation for homeowners and has distributed resources around environmental awareness and tips for safe and sustainable home heating. Its other work includes connecting people with incentives, supporting them to grow their own vegetables, and installing over 300 smoke alarms in partnership with the Red Cross. Looking forward, it hopes to collaborate with local political leaders to establish resilience hubs in each of the five counties it serves. These spaces would act as a safe haven for the community during times of tornadoes, flooding, and extreme heat.
