As part of a nationwide organization, the Central Arkansas chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is working to dismantle oppressive systems based on inequality and change society from the ground up into one that cares for all beings. Since 2014, it has supported worker organizing efforts and provided mutual aid across Central Arkansas, including Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs. With a focus on advancing the interests of the working class, who are most exposed to the harms of the climate crisis, the group’s members show solidarity with striking workers at picket lines and coach people through the first steps of organizing their workplace. “We feel that the degradation of the environment is also a worker issue, because it’s the place we have to live in,” says co-chair Gregory Moore. In striving to improve the conditions, pay, and wellbeing of working people, the group is helping pave the way for a just transition that centres the rights of workers and their communities.

With 98 due-paying members, the Central Arkansas DSA is led by three volunteer co-chairs who are elected each year. It hosts events including an annual May Day Fest and a free tail light repair clinic. Here, 33 cars were fixed in one day, helping people avoid fines which for the most vulnerable community members can lead to cycles of debt and incarceration. The organization also participates in regular community cleanups, and stepped in to help clear away debris following the 2023 tornado in Little Rock. Of particular importance to the DSA is operating as a mass movement that welcomes people in. To this end, the Central Arkansas chapter seeks to make political activism more accessible, including by creating cooling stations with water and fans at protests and hosting an organizing fair where people can learn how to get involved with local groups. It also collects signatures for ballot issues, lowering the barriers to entry around participation in political actions.
