In the small town of Casa, Arkansas, where community spirit runs deep, an initiative was launched to transform the old Casa school cafeteria into a vibrant community center under the leadership of former Mayor Gary Rainey. This project, driven by dedicated volunteers, aims to unite and support local residents by addressing the critical need for social and emergency support services. Without it, residents would lack a vital social gathering place and a safe haven in emergencies. The center serves as a registered 501(c)(3) organization, hosting programs that help seniors socialize and celebrate holidays, thus providing a space that combats isolation and enhances community bonds. With the upcoming addition of generators, it will be vital in emergencies. The community center is equipped to provide essentials like heat during power outages and cooling during heat waves, and ensures safety for those dependent on medical devices. As a central hub, the Casa Community Center empowers residents with resources and strengthens social cohesion.

Powered by a team of about a dozen volunteers—half of whom are teens—the Casa Community Center thrives on the generosity of local residents and churches, who offer essential support like food and Bingo prizes. It serves as a rental venue for community events, reinforcing its role as a social cornerstone. Weekly, it supports fixed-income individuals, with many seniors finding life-enriching social interactions during meals. The center’s proactive community involvement includes annual Arbor Day events, trash cleanups, flu shots, and educational programs on scam prevention, making it a beacon of sustainability and awareness. With a CDC grant, it is transforming into a cooling and warming station and has raised $18,000 locally for an outdoor pavilion, showcasing its dynamic role as a community sanctuary. These efforts demonstrate measurable benefits, enriching residents’ lives and fostering a strong, united community.
