Little Rock, Arkansas

Arkansas Broadcasting Foundation

Arkansas Broadcasting Foundation’s mission is to serve the predominately low-and-moderate income population of Arkansas — and the greater world beyond — through its non-commercial, listener-supported community radio station, KABF (88.3 FM). Based in Little Rock, KABF is dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and promoting community engagement through an eclectic mix of music, news, and cultural programming. Since 1984, they’ve challenged the norms of commercial radio through an expansive array of genres, from jazz and blues to hip-hop and reggae, while spotlighting local artists and fostering discourse on important social issues. “The Voice of the People,” KABF provides a platform for underrepresented perspectives and community-driven messages, ensuring that every listener has access to a rich, inclusive experience. Through their commitment to volunteerism and community support, they remain a vital, independent voice for change and creativity.

Political organizer, labor union activist, and co-founder of the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), Wade Rathke hosts the weekly podcast, Wade’s World, each Friday at 9:00 am (CST) on topics ranging from current events, politics, and social justice. Source: KABF.org

The listener-supported nonprofit is a broadcasting pioneer. One of only 12 non-commercial radio U.S. stations with a 100,000-watt signal, KABF broadcasts across Arkansas, as well as some neighboring states. Reaching an estimated 50,000 listeners every week, the minority-led KABF offers genres rarely heard on commercial radio, gives local artists radio airplay, and provides organizations and citizens with a means to reach wider audiences. Originally conceived by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to advance social reform efforts, the station has evolved to become a vital platform for diverse musical genres and community issues. From its roots in advocating for low-income families to its role in showcasing local talent and supporting underground movements, KABF continues to offer a unique and independent voice, driven by the dedication of volunteers and community donors.
