Young, Gifted & Green

The mission of Young, Gifted and Green (formerly Black Millennials 4 Flint) is to empower communities to take direct action and to advocate against the crisis of lead exposure, specifically in African American and Latino communities. The organization was founded by a teacher who was horrified by the lack of government response to the Flint Water Crisis. As an educator, she saw first-hand the profound impact of lead exposure on the cognitive development of children. She also knew that the pervasive and historical siting of industrial waste disposal and toxin-emitting factories in low-income communities already suffering the effects of lead contamination in neglected rental housing and deteriorated infrastructure was creating a multi-channel cycle of crises, including physical and mental health and maternal mortality. Young, Gifted and Green is fostering the nationwide development of community leaders united to seek environmental justice for lead-free disadvantaged communities.

Young, Gifted and Green Was founded as Black Millennials 4 Flint in 2016 by LaTricea Adams after she stepped in to coordinate emergency relief efforts for the Flint Water Crisis by bringing together the resources of corporations and the management skills of regional Urban League Young Professionals chapters to provide bottled water to affected neighborhoods. Adams expanded the mission by training young BIPOC leadership to achieve successful education, advocacy, and legislative initiatives to combat lead contamination in Flint, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Memphis. The organization has partnered with parents and schools, city councils, businesses, and civic leaders, the Environmental Defense Fund, HUD, the EPA, the U.S. Congress, The White House, and Black Entertainment Television. Working at all levels of government, Young, Gifted and Green helps draft legislation promoting environmental justice locally and nationally.
