Physicians for Social Responsibility Pennsylvania

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) was founded in 1961 by healthcare professionals dedicated to addressing pressing environmental and public health issues. With over 50,000 members nationwide, including physicians, nurses, and public health experts, PSR operates through its national headquarters and various regional chapters. The organization’s primary focus lies in leveraging the medical community’s knowledge to champion policies that advance peace, safeguard public health, and combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons. PSR focuses on educating the public and policymakers about the dangers of nuclear proliferation, climate change, and other threats to human health and survival. Through research, advocacy, and community outreach, PSR strives to create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable world for all. Their tireless efforts are guided by the belief that prevention is key in safeguarding human health and well-being, ultimately preventing what cannot be cured.

PSR’s members are actively engaged in advocacy, education, and research initiatives at both local and national levels. Key accomplishments include successfully advocating for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the Iran nuclear deal, which aimed to reduce the global nuclear threat. In 1985, the organization shared the Pulitzer Prize with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) for raising public awareness on the catastrophic medical consequences of using nuclear weapons. In 1992, PSR expanded its efforts to environmental health issues, recognizing the new dangers presented to communities. PSR chapters around the country coordinated with PSR National to produce a series of reports documenting the damaging health effects of climate change in their state or region, showing that “the signs of global warming are already here.” The organization’s commitment to evidence-based advocacy and collaborative action has solidified its reputation as a leading voice in the fight for a safer, healthier, and more sustainable world.
