Organizational Mission: HUBitual Learning and Outreach was founded in 2022 in Window Rock, AZ, capital of the Navajo Nation. The area has been significantly affected by uranium mining, leaving a legacy of contaminated land, water, and air – and a tremendous environmental and health burden on the community. The mission of HUBitual Learning and Outreach is to support the community through personal and professional development initiatives, steward innovative micro-projects, and promote environmental stewardship, and community outreach. Its first initiative, Southwest Environmental Stewards, seeks to recruit groups across the southwest US to leverage resources and provide support for community-based initiatives in climate and environmental justice. Historically, financial support has primarily gone to state, county, city, or tribal projects without a strong focus on community engagement. This initiative would bring groups together, establishing collaborative action items to ensure project viability and progress.
Program: UB for Southwest Environmental Stewards
- OBJECTIVE- Recruit groups within the southwest region of the United States to collaborate alongside the HSES team to better amplify collective resources; establish collaborative action items to ensure project viability and progress; provide support to grassroots efforts that organize community-based initiatives in climate and environmental justice.
- BACKGROUND- As of recent, the EPA has integrated small grants into community-based initiatives. Before that, the primary recipients of financial support are typically state, county, city, or tribal projects that do not incorporate or educate the community on CEJ. Therefore, the focus of this project is to assist in aligning objectives and support those who are leading their peers and youth toward a holistic and environmentally conscious community.
- DEMOGRAPHIC: Grassroots organizations; school-based groups; individual community members; chapter leaders; and those who would otherwise not have access to resources needed for an effective project outcome. No age specifications; demographics will consist of Navajo Nation and bordering towns for direct project initiatives; support and collaborative efforts can expand to the greater Southwest Region.
